Consider the Little Things - Erik Raymond

Sometimes it’s the little things, the small details, that hit the high notes of our praise.
David was on the run from an angry brood who wanted him out as king. There are thousands pursuing him. To make matters worse the coup is led by none other than his son Absalom. The king is fleeing the people who were supposed to be loyal to him.
In the midst of all this the man whose hands have been trained for war is training his heart to delight in the Lord God. In one section he recalls,
I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. (Ps. 3:5)
This may seem like a simple thing but I assure you it is not. There is an army pursuing him. And after running for his life the previous day he lays his head down in the evening upon the pillow of God’s providence. In the morning he awakes and he marvels. He opens his eyes and he praises God for preserving him.
I would imagine that none who read this post woke up with the same circumstances of king David. However, in a post Genesis three world safety is not guaranteed. The world, the flesh, and the devil are in opposition to us. The roaring lion is seeking who he might devour–not simply lap our face. The fact that we awake in safety is due to the sovereign, preserving, grace of God. It should make us smile and sing to be so cared for. As David wrote,
But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. (Psalm 3:3)
This also reminds us of David’s other son. He too was violently pursued as his kingdom was rejected. Ultimately his head was not lifted by God but caused to be bowed under the intense weight of judgment. Jesus, the Son of David, was abandoned by God so that we, his people (David included) would never be forsaken. He bowed his head that ours might be lifted.
When you look at the big picture of God’s redemptive plan you can see fingerprints of God’s preserving grace all over the place. Take some time to consider the small things today that your heart may be filled with delight in our very big God of grace.
