When Malachi first came home we would swaddle him because it was cold and he was so tiny. We would then put him in the newborn napper part of the Pack N Play shown below. He slept really well in here after moving him out of the bassinet in our room.
Eventually we stopped swaddling and just put him with a blanket over top.
Then sometime time later, not sure when we got her, we started swaddling him again. This time to help him sleep better as he seemed to wake himself up with his startle reflex and obsession with trying to suck on his thumbs.
Since it is so hot here now and Malachi is outgrowing this swaddle sack we decided it was time to break him of this habit. The past couple of days I stopped swaddling him for naps and bedtime. Nap time was a little rough the first day as he would wake up after a 40 min sleep cycle and then could not settle himself down and go back to sleep. However, yesterday afternoon he took a 2hr nap and then slept for 12hrs straight last night. I think he and I are both really enjoying this new change. He helps that he has become a THUMB sucker now. He has gotten pretty good at sucking that thumb and that helps him to get himself to sleep.
